Message from Police Chief Jorge Tro

Message from Police Chief Jorge Tro

The federal government have been conducting immigration enforcement in cities across the United States to include city of Canby .  As this type of enforcement continues, we know it has created fear in our community.

The members of the Canby Police Department are sworn to uphold the U.S. Constitution, the laws of the State of Oregon, and adhere to the department's policies and procedures. The State of Oregon is a sanctuary state, and Oregon law (ORS 181A.820) specifically prohibits local law enforcement from getting involved in civil immigration matters. It is against Oregon law for state and local law enforcement or public agencies (state and local government offices) in the state of Oregon to participate directly or indirectly in immigration enforcement. The enforcement of immigration is the responsibility of the Department of Homeland Security and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

As the Canby Police Chief, it is my responsibility to ensure that the members of the Canby Police Department continue to provide the level of service that all our community members expect.  Our mission is to enhance safety by building trust through strong community partnerships. We remain committed to protecting, serving, and supporting all residents and community members of the City of Canby, regardless of their actual or perceived national origin or immigration status.
