City Government

City Incorporation

The City of Canby was incorporated in 1893 and operates under the provision of its own charter and applicable State law, with a Mayor-Council form of government.  The Mayor and Council are part-time elected officials who exercise the legislative powers of the City and determine matters of policy. The mayor serves for a term of two years, elected at each biennial general election.  The Council is composed of six members elected from the city at large, each for a term of four years.  The City Administrator directs, coordinates, and administers the activities of the City as defined by the Mayor and Council. The City Council encourages broad community participation on City Boards and Commissions. Members of the public are urged to attend meetings, learn the duties and purposes of the various boards and apply for appointment when vacancies occur. An elected Mayor and Council direct city government through an appointed city administrator. The City Council meets twice monthly on the first and third Wednesday. These meetings are open to the public and broadcast live over the local cable television station.
