Canby Flower and Garden Day Trip

Wooden Show Tulip Festival

This adventure is best in April through October…

Begin a great day in Canby – home to some of the best soils in the Willamette Valley to admire the blossoms of our specialty local growers. Canby  has a mild climate and long growing season that supports a vibrant nursery industry. They have developed a wide variety of perennials, bulbs and shrubs for your every garden need. Begin your day at either the Wooden Shoe Nursery (March – April) or Swan Island Dahlia Fields (July – October) and walk through the fields to admire the amazing variety of tulips or Dahlias. Take a brochure or list with you because you can’t help but want several for your gardens. Pick up a fresh bouquet for your home and linger in the gift shops for that special local gift for your gardening friends. Stunning views of Mt. Hood are never far anywhere you go.

If you are at the dahlia fields, stop in across the street at the Canby Flower Farmer for fresh local produce, cut flowers and a ride on their miniature train. Also visit Simnet Nursery next door has impressive Rhodies and Daphne’s for sale.

This is exhausting! It is time to take a break for some coffee or tea and lunch in downtown Canby. I recommend grabbing a sandwich to go and relaxing at the charming Wait Park or the comfortable benches along 1st Avenue to admire garden showcases at each intersection, lovely street landscaping and four sculptures.

Now you are inspired! Visit some of the best specialty nurseries in the area. Several have stunning display gardens to inspire you. Many will have a retail nursery to sell you that special plant to dazzle your gardening friends with. the staff are experts that can help you pick the right plant for your tough garden spot.

  • Secret garden Growers for specialty perennials and attractive display garden.
  • Millers Manor Garden features 1000 rare and unusual miniature and dwarf plants for the most discerning plant-a-holics.
  • Terra Nova is open M-F 8-3:30. Their dazzling display gardens feature perennials including rare and unusual Heuchera’s, Heucherella’s, Echinacea’s, red hot pokers, Tiarella’s and Pulmonaria’s.

After your relaxing and inspiring day, and enjoy a wine or beer at the outside tables at the Backstop Grill or Gwynn’s Coffee House.  Once you are home and the plants are in the shade, put your feet up. You have done enough for the day.  Planting those new plants can wait until tomorrow.
